A stroll through Vienna's old quarter from an archaeological viewpoint

Meer over het boek

The area of Vienna has been used by man since the Lower Palaeolithic Age. Lower Palaeolithic hunters and gatherers had not settled at this point in history. From the Neolithic Age onwards the first crop-growers and stock farmers settled in the Vienna area. Finds from the Bronze and Iron Ages give us insights into prehistoric life. The Romans left numerous traces behind them in Vienna: military camp, settlement, civilian city, estates, and the streets and water lines that went with them. The guide “A stroll through Vienna’s Old Quarter from an archaeological viewpoint” takes you to the following locations in the centre of Vienna: Michaelerplatz, Kohlmarkt, Naglergasse, Heidenschuß, Am Hof, Judenplatz, Wipplingerstrasse, Hohe Brücke, Renngasse and Freyung. Texts, maps and 3D reconstructions as well as the enclosed CD-Rom with animated films give an insight into the Roman past of the different locations.
