A special mention for 2004 highlights the new Doctoral Symposium Workshop, where three postdoc researchers created an innovative setup to connect PhD students and allow them to submit research proposals for evaluation. A select number of submissions were assessed by a panel of senior experts at the conference, with students presenting their work to a broader audience. Participants enjoyed free access to other parts of the OTM program and paid a significantly reduced fee for the Doctoral Symposium, largely sponsored by other attendees. If deemed successful, the General Chairs aim to expand this model in future OTM conferences to attract more young researchers to the OnTheMove forum. The three main conferences and associated workshops focus on the distributed aspects of modern computing systems and the application pull from the Internet and Semantic Web. DOA 2004 emphasized distributed object infrastructure, ODBASE 2004 concentrated on knowledge bases and formal semantics, while CoopIS 2004 addressed the interaction of these technologies with management issues in networked organizations. These areas naturally overlap, with many submissions exploring their mutual impacts.
