Set in 1880s Ukraine, the story follows Katerina, a teenage peasant who escapes her abusive home and finds refuge with a Jewish family. Embracing their customs, her life takes a tragic turn when the family is murdered during pogroms. As she navigates a world filled with persecution, Katerina's life spirals further into despair after the loss of her child and a subsequent act of violence leads to her imprisonment. Years later, she emerges into a post-WWII landscape, grappling with the haunting absence of the Jewish community she cherished and her role as a witness to their existence.
