It examines the Chinese media's portrayal of intoxicants and societal perceptions of addiction, highlighting the impact of Japanese control on these narratives. Additionally, it discusses the anti-intoxicant movement aimed at reducing consumption. This work is notable for being the first comprehensive English-language study on alcohol use in modern China and the first to address intoxicant regulations in the region.
