Geisteswissenschaft als Aufgabe

The book explores the current state of the humanities and their reform in academia. It begins with an examination of the challenges faced by the humanities, particularly in relation to funding from the German Research Foundation, and discusses long-term research projects in philosophy. The role of museums and literature archives in contemporary society is also analyzed, alongside recent cultural presentations that merge exhibition and research. The second section addresses the participation of theology in the humanities, the status of classical philology, and the research landscape of Renaissance and Humanism studies. It further delves into the state of German literature research as a so-called mass subject, archaeology within philological-historical disciplines, and the current situation in music research. The final part reflects on the cultural and political functions of historical humanities and provides observations on the state of ancient history, historiography, legal studies, and political science in Germany. Contributions from various scholars highlight the pressing issues and responsibilities facing these disciplines, culminating in insights from participants of the working group on humanities and research policy.
