Das Land Kärnten besitzt mit etwa 900 Arten (bzw. 950 Taxa) eine der reichsten regionalen Moosfloren Europas. Diese Vielfalt ist aber bedroht und Maßnahmen zu ihrem Erhalt erforderlich. Rund 20 % der Arten mussten in dieser Roten Liste als unmittelbar, weitere 11 % wegen extremer Seltenheit als potentiell gefährdet eingestuft werden. Den höchsten Anteil an gefährdeten Moosarten findet man in den Mooren, gefolgt von jenen der Gewässer und des Kulturlandes. Hauptursachen des Artenrückgangs sind die Nutzungsänderungen und -intensivierungen in der Land- und Forstwirtschaft, der zunehmende Flächenverbrauch, Fließgewässerregulierung und Kraftwerksbau sowie die Luftverschmutzung. Zunehmende Bedeutung kommt nun auch dem Klimawandel zu. Eine Auswahl von 22 Kärntner Moosarten wird in Wort und Bild portraitiert.

This catalogue presents the first comprehensive synopsis of hornworts (Anthocerotophyta) and liverworts (Marchantiophyta) in Austria. Unlike other volumes in the Catalogus Florae Austriae, it does not include keys or descriptions of genera and species; instead, it focuses on ecology, phytosociology, and the distribution of all taxa. The general section offers a historical overview and current knowledge of these plants across the country's federal states, complemented by a brief “hepaticogeography” that emphasizes the unique hepaticofloristic features of Austria’s diverse landscapes. In the special section, four hornworts and 260 liverworts, along with various infraspecific taxa, are systematically presented. Nomenclature and systematics primarily adhere to the latest “World Checklist of Hornworts and Liverworts,” with some justified exceptions. Families are organized systematically, while genera are listed alphabetically. The catalogue pays special attention to species distribution, drawing on extensive literature and public herbarium collections, as well as numerous unpublished records and critically revised specimens. It also highlights ecological and phytosociological insights based on local observations. The decline in species diversity, affecting Austria’s hornworts and liverworts, is assessed alongside the increasing threats to species and their habitats.
