Cette deuxième édition retrace l'histoire de l'Europe, de l'arrivée des premiers hommes sur le continent jusqu'à la fin de l'année 1996. Premier livre d'histoire à être le fruit du travail conjoint de 14 historiens européens, chacun de nationalité différente, il propose un panorama d'ensemble au-dessus des idéologies nationalistes. En s'interrogeant sur l'identité européenne, il apporte des réponses. Pas toutes. Car l'histoire est aussi un débat. Il suscitera chez chacun, les jeunes en particulier, de nouvelles questions : l'Europe nous invite à réfléchir autant sur son avenir que sur son passé. Searching for the Third Way The book is devoted to modernization of Poland from a historical perspective, with particular emphasis on the post-1989 transformation process. It is an attempt at a theoretical, interdisciplinary approach developed within the author’s own theory of social system (the concept of a meeting). It also contains reflections on the possibility of opening the way to a new identity of the Poles and the search for Poland’s exit from the state known as the periphery of the world.

Publikacja o charakterze naukowo-eseistycznym stanowi refleksję nad polskimi mitologiami ojczystymi – śladami w pamięci zbiorowej po mitologiach: szlacheckiej, inteligenckiej i plebejskiej. Autor porusza problem trwałości mitologii, starając się odpowiedzieć na pytanie, czy dawne mitologie, np. szlacheckie czy inteligenckie, sarmackie lub romantyczne, nacjonalistyczne czy rewolucyjne, są nadal obecne w naszym życiu. Zastanawia się nad rolą, jaką mitologie pełnią w kreowaniu relacji społeczeństwa ze środowiskiem. On Native Mythologies This book of (scholarly) essays reflects on the natives mythologies of Poles – on traces left in the collective memory of mythologies of the nobility, the intelligentsia, and plebeian mythologies. The author addresses the issue of mythology’s perseverance, trying to see if old mythologies – like those of the nobility and the intelligentsia, Sarmatian or Romantic, nationalist or revolutionary ones – are still present in our lives. He also ponders the role played by mythologies in the shaping of society’s relationship with the natural environment.
