Set against the backdrop of boarding school life in Kenya, the story follows Clay as he navigates a challenging environment after being dropped off by his parents. With the guidance of Ox, the rugby team captain, and the friendship of Titch, a struggling reader, Clay finds solace and purpose in rugby. His journey takes him from Kenya to Washington state, back to Kenya, and eventually to California and Sudan, where he reunites with Titch amidst the turmoil of civil war, showcasing themes of friendship, resilience, and the search for belonging.
