The approach of Symbolic Interaction (SI) which Herbert Blumer called «Symbolic Interactionism», is regarded as a modern version of the sociology of Verstehen, originally outlined by Georg Simmel and Max Weber. This book is divided into four chapters. In the first the relevant philosophical sources are indicated, particularly those relating to Georg Simmel. The second chapter examines the basic principles of Verstehen and the construction of ideal types. In the third chapter an account is given of the intellectual background of SI, with an introduction to the main proponents involved in its inception: Charles Horton Cooley, William Isaac Thomas, and George Herbert Mead. The fourth chapter discusses the writings of Herbert Blumer, Anselm Strauss, Tamotsu Shibutani and Erving Goffman. Transcriptions of tape recordings of important statements by Shibutani and by Goffman are included to assure authenticity on critical issues.

Georg Simmel is and will continue to be one of the most important authors for all the humanities. This is true because hardly anyone else has forseen the enormous changes in culture, politics, and in the social conditions in general, that would occur in the course of the 20th century like he did. It is also true because he discovered a new way of thinking, one which made this premonition of dramatic change possible. Der Autor skizziert zunächst die Grundlagen der Verstehenden Soziologie sowie den Weg der europäischen Soziologie zwischen Positivismus und Neukantianismus. Ausführlich behandelt er auch den direkten Bezugspunkt Herbert Blumers: die Arbeiten Georg Herbert Meads, des „geistigen Vaters“ der TSI. Zum Abschluss werden die spezifischen Fragestellungen weiterer TSI-Vertreter wie Anselm Strauss, Tamotsu Shibutani und besonders Erving Goffman erörtert.

The volume Verstehen and Pragmatism demonstrates that there is a common bond between the various methodological positions in interpretative sociology: What unites them is the neo-Kantian epistemology as well as the rejection of the notion of a unified science. The individual chapters elaborate on the thesis that history and the social sciences differ significantly from the natural sciences. The book includes articles on the history of sociology, epistemological and methodological problems as well as on the practical application of interpretative methods. It deals with the most significant parts of the writings of Simmel, Max Weber, Scheler, Znaniecki, Schütz, Blumer, Goffman, and Peter Berger.

Anhand ausgewählter Texte von Immanuel Kant, Wilhelm Dilthey, Georg Simmel und Max Weber wird gezeigt, wie sich die geisteswissenschaftliche Methode der Soziologie in ihrer Eigenständigkeit entwickelt hat. Der thematische Schwerpunkt des Buches liegt bei der Soziologie Georg Simmels (etwa zwei Drittel des Umfangs). Simmel hat wichtige Anregungen von Kant und Dilthey übernommen. Durch seine Grundlegung der Verstehenden Soziologie hat er die frühe Soziologie der U. S. A. (Schule von Chicago) entscheidend geprägt (Robert E. Park war ein Schüler Simmels) und das Werk Max Webers vorbereitet.
