Rectal cancer is one of the most prevalent cancers world-wide. It is also a paradigm for multimodal management, as the combination of surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy is often necessary to achieve the optimal outcome. Recently, international experts met in Heidelberg, Germany to discuss the latest developments in the management of rectal cancer, including the anatomic and pathologic basis, staging tools, surgical concepts including fast-track surgery and laparoscopic resection, functional outcome after surgery and the role of radio- and chemotherapy. This monograph summarizes this meeting and gives an extensive overview of the current concepts in management of rectal cancer.

Compiled by experienced authors in pancreatic diseases, this book merges evidence-based literature with expert insights. It adopts an interdisciplinary approach to the basis, diagnosis, and treatment of pancreatic conditions, featuring a clearly structured text linked to corresponding illustrations on two-page spreads. Organized into three main parts—acute pancreatitis, chronic pancreatitis, and pancreatic tumors—the layout enhances clarity. The “Acute pancreatitis” chapter discusses new necrosis markers, advanced imaging techniques such as nuclear magnetic resonance, and various randomized controlled studies on treatment. The chronic pancreatitis section focuses on clinical aspects, pancreatic function, imaging, and recent clinical studies. In the tumors section, there is a strong emphasis on imaging advancements, including spiral computed tomography and ultra-rapid magnetic resonance imaging using the “all-in-one” technique. Additionally, the book highlights the growing significance of molecular biology and gene polymorphisms in understanding diseases. This well-organized and accessible encyclopedia is particularly beneficial for general practitioners and clinical students, as well as specialists seeking deeper knowledge, including internists, gastroenterologists, surgeons, radiologists, oncologists, pathologists, and pediatricians. It serves as a comprehensive reference for anyone interested in pancreatic diseases.

This volume provides a detailed and comprehensive review of current knowledge concerning all aspects of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). The opening chapters on its pathogenesis and epidemiology include discussions of Helicobacter pylori as an etiological agent, and Barrett's esophagus. The bulk of the volume is taken up with critical reviews of all the contemporary approaches to GERD - both medical and surgical (open and laparoscopic) - and presents the early results from laparoscopic trials throughout the world. The book concludes with detailed descriptions from expert practitioners of the various alternative laparoscopic fundoplication techniques. This timely publication will be of interest not only to gastroenterologists and gastrointestinal surgeons, but to all doctors and general practitioners who must advise and prescribe treatment for patients with this common, distressing, but remediable complaint.

The introduction of laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) revolutionized gallstone surgery because of the reduced operative trauma, quicker recovery time and diminished postoperative pain. More than 80% of all elective cholecystectomies are now performed laparoscopically. This new procedure, however, is the first in surgical history to have been declared the best option without the prior back-up of comparative scientific data. This volume brings together leading specialists to evaluate 5 years’ experience with LC and to determine whether this procedure can now really be considered the standard treatment for symptomatic gallstones. Following a short historical sketch and discussion of the pathogenesis of gallstone disease, the advantages and disadvantages of conventional open and laparoscopic procedures are considered and international results are compared. The place of conservative treatments using drug therapy and lithotripsy are included to provide complete coverage.
Laparoscopic colorectal surgery

Although laparoscopic cholecystectomy is the preferred procedure for symptomatic gallstone disease and acute cholecystitis, the use of this technique in colorectal surgery is still controversial and not yet widely in use. This publication offers readers a timely and critical appraisal of laparoscopic colon surgery in benign disease and malignancy. Reports from five countries describe experiences with laparoscopic colon surgery, including operative techniques, indications, complications, resection rates, duration of recovery, and cost effectiveness. The authors report that although the procedure is being applied with increasing frequency in benign disease, its use in colorectal cancer gives cause for concern due to the alarming rate of port-site metastasis. The overwhelming consensus is that more controlled trials are needed to determine the potential and specific limitations of laparoscopic colorectal surgery. Well-written and succinct, this publication effectively outlines the outstanding issues in this very challenging area of gastroenterologic surgery.
