For the most part, political and scholarly debates about the future of the North Atlantic Alliance embrace enlargement and military conflict management as crucial factors. Yet another set of determinants lies in the political relationships within the Alliance itself and vis-a-vis other international institutions. The Madrid 'Enlargement Summit' of July 1997 and a proclaimed 'new' NATO notwithstanding, those issues continue to have a strong impact on NATO's performance and on North Atlantic Alliance politics. Enlargement not at all terminates their relevance. It sparks a second wave in shaping NATO's future, but the first wave remains, and it remains critical. The subject matter of the present analysis is this first wave of NATO's adaptation between 1990 and mid-1997, an institutionalist approach beyond the narrow scope of the common neorealist-neoliberal debate providing the frame of reference. One lesson for the 'new', enlarging Alliance is that it should refrain from adopting too diffuse political responsibilities and claiming a too broad spectrum of functions in post-strategic security politics.

Der Katastrophenmanagementzyklus von Prävention bis Wiederaufbau sowie Herausforderungen durch COVID-19 werden behandelt.

Das Buch liefert anwendungsorientierte Analysen und theoretisch-methodische Grundlagen internationaler Politik. Die Analysen reichen von regionaler Integration in Europa und Asien bis hin zu internationalem Terrorismus als Herausforderung für nationale Sicherheitspolitik. Im Theorieteil steht die Erläuterung und Weiterentwicklung des Neorealismus der Münchner Schule im Vordergrund.

Was bedeutet Institutionalisierung als Strategie politischer Konfliktregelung und als politologische Analyseperspektive, konkret was sind ihre Praxisverfahren, Erfolgsbedingungen, Nebenwirkungen und Gegenanzeigen? Um das zu beantworten, wird das erreichbare theoretisch-methodische Repertoire für kooperative Konfliktregelung durch Institutionalisierung dargestellt, für die Konfliktanalyse ebenso wie für Fragen politischer Konfliktstrategie erschlossen und an europäischen Praxisfällen durchdekliniert.

Das Ende des Kalten Kriegs hat in der Politikwissenschaft zwei Generaldebatten ausgelöst: diejenige um die Zukunft internationaler Sicherheit und Sicherheitspolitik sowie die um die entsprechende Theorie und Methode. Diese Studie will beides verbinden. Die drei großen Paradigmen Neorealismus, Neoliberalismus und Postinternationalismus werden dabei systematisch auf Aspekte der globalen, regionalen und nationalen Dimension internationaler Sicherheit nach dem Ende der bipolaren Welt angewandt. Dem folgt die Grundlegung eines Modells post-strategischer Sicherheit(spolitik).
