Tissue heterogeneity is a subject of long-standing interest in liver pathophysiology. Recent advances in the cell and molecular biology of hepatocytes and sinusoidal cells have yielded new insights into how liver cells differentiate and establish their functional compartmentation at the hepatic lobule level.
