Early vaccines relied on enhanced resistance to measure efficacy, but modern vaccines utilize standardized laboratory tests to confirm quality and potency, paralleling in vivo protective capacity. Currently, there is a surge in the development of new and improved vaccines, driven by advances in our understanding of the immune system and the molecular structure of microorganisms. This knowledge allows for the creation of vaccines that include only specific molecules from pathogens, eliminating potentially harmful components. Unlike earlier attenuated live vaccines developed through empirical methods, contemporary vaccines can be engineered through precise molecular interventions in the microorganism's genome.
