Recent advances in ultrastructural and molecular research have enhanced our understanding of traditional chrysophytes, leading to the description of many new genera over the past two decades. This encyclopedia surveys 201 genera of chrysophytes, including 110 genera of Chrysophyceae sensu stricto and 58 additional genera now classified in other classes of Chromophyta/Heterokonta, such as Synurophyceae, Dictyochophyceae, Pelagophyceae, Phaeothamniophyceae, and „Bicosoecophyceae“. Additionally, 33 insufficiently known genera of uncertain affinity are discussed, many of which have been previously assigned to the Chrysophyceae. The classification presented here differs significantly from earlier monographs by Bourrelly and Starmach, incorporating information on over 80 genera not previously treated, including nearly 50 marine genera now classified in Dictyochophyceae, Pelagophyceae, or as uncertain chrysophyte affiliations. Notably, some colorless flagellates, previously included in Chrysophyceae, have been reclassified due to their relationships with different protistan lineages. This volume results from an ambitious project initiated in 1988 by Bruce Parker, aimed at creating an encyclopedia of algal genera.
