Operations control systems in public transport

Meer over het boek

Interlocking systems for remote control have been available for around fifty years, with computers entering the market about thirty years ago. For the past two decades, various programs have aimed to simplify timetable creation, optimize traffic flows, and automate movement control. Despite the proliferation of systems from numerous manufacturers, compatibility issues persist, often preventing seamless information exchange. This work explores the current landscape of operations control systems in public transport, considering diverse operational patterns globally. For example, the U.S. features long routes with minimal daily freight train services, while Europe has mixed services with frequent train schedules and rapid underground lines. The book also addresses operations-control components for buses and trams, making it a comprehensive resource on public transport systems. A significant insight presented is that many operational requirements are similar across different modes, which, if applied, could lead to more targeted product development. The book's premise is to advocate for integrated solutions through an Operations Management Centre that consolidates various requirements into a cohesive system. Additionally, it offers synthesized solutions that allow transport operators with simpler needs to assemble cost-effective systems using fewer components.
