Positron emission tomography (PET) offers highly sensitive, unbiased in vivo measurements of local tracer activity, a unique advantage over other imaging techniques. Since its introduction into medicine over 25 years ago, PET has become a powerful tool for scientific brain studies, though its application in clinical neurology remains limited compared to its recognized value in oncology. This underutilization is unfortunate, as PET holds significant potential for enhancing clinical neurology and neuroscience. To fully realize this potential, close collaboration between PET experts and clinicians is essential, along with the integration of PET into clinical studies. This book reviews the role of PET in neuroscience, emphasizing its potential to improve diagnosis and treatment in neurology and psychiatry. The aim is to bridge the gap between scientific advances in brain PET and clinical care, ultimately benefiting patients. The focus is on practical, clinically relevant issues, highlighting established knowledge and identifying areas needing further research.
