Where is system architecture heading? This question was explored by the special interest group on Computer and Systems Architecture of the German computer and information technology associations during two Future Workshops in 2002. The consensus: everything will change, yet some fundamentals will remain. Future systems will rely on established silicon and integrated circuit technology, well-understood programming languages, software engineering techniques, and established operating systems and middleware concepts. While emerging technologies like quantum computing and DNA processing are intriguing, they are unlikely to become mainstream in the next decade. Despite advancements in these foundational technologies, a significant trend unifying diverse developments is the challenge of mastering complexity. Rigid systems developed under strict top-down approaches have reached their limits, evident from the failures of several large-scale projects. Nature, with its intricate systems like anthills, beehives, and swarms, has addressed complexity in ways we have yet to fully comprehend. These natural systems differ fundamentally from those designed by engineers and computer scientists, highlighting the need for new approaches in system design to navigate complexity effectively.
