Theodor Lessing (1872–1933) was often seen as unorthodox during his lifetime, advocating for women's rights, environmental causes, and humane working conditions. He highlighted the extinction of species, founded an "Anti-Noise Association," delivered lectures to workers, and established the first adult education classes in Hanover. In his philosophical writings, he critiqued the decline of the Earth through the Spirit and interpreted history as a means to find meaning in the meaningless. Lessing was murdered in exile in Marienbad just seven months after the Nazis came to power. In hindsight, he is regarded as a visionary and prophet, particularly for his prescient remarks in 1925 about Hindenburg's presidency, suggesting that a philosopher should lead, and warning that behind a "zero" figure could lie a future tyrant. To commemorate the 70th anniversary of his death in October 2003, the Moses Mendelssohn Centre hosted an international conference focused on Lessing's contributions. This volume includes 13 essays that explore and analyze his life and work, along with excerpts from his writings that highlight the ongoing relevance of his ideas.
