Characterization and utilization of dairy cattle in Sudan

The study aimed to characterize Kenana and Butana cattle breeds through on-farm, on-station, and molecular assessments, alongside evaluating various dairy improvement efforts in Sudan. These breeds are valued for their adaptability within specific production systems, with milk production serving as a crucial source of income and sustenance. However, unfavorable conditions such as feed scarcity, disease, and water shortages contribute to low milk yields. Cattle owners prioritize measures to address these production constraints. Research indicates that under controlled conditions, Kenana and Butana herds perform comparably to some top breeds in tropical regions. Genetic analysis of growth hormone (GH1) and diacylglycerol acyltransferase (DGAT1) genes in both breeds supports the viability of crossbreeding, which can enhance production systems while maintaining moderate levels of B. taurus blood. The introduction of Friesian cattle in central Sudan necessitates high inputs, achievable only with elevated milk prices. Given the diverse production environments and management conditions, a tailored regional dairy breeding policy is essential to develop dairy cattle suited to specific eco-regions and production systems.
