Detecting and avoiding inconsistencies between requirements and products is a common challenge in software development, often resulting in defects, missed schedules, and budget overruns. Requirements traceability aims to address this by providing methods, tools, and guidelines to manage dependencies between software artifacts. This book presents the EvoTrace approach, a novel method designed to simplify the detection and management of interdependencies among software development artifacts amid evolving requirements. EvoTrace enhances the semi-automated detection of these interdependencies, particularly focusing on requirements, by applying Information Retrieval algorithms—commonly used in Internet search engines—to Trace Retrieval. While previous research has explored similar methods with promising results, EvoTrace distinguishes itself by anticipating and incorporating changes in artifacts, addressing a gap in existing approaches. The method has been rigorously evaluated using a large industrial dataset, demonstrating significant improvements in effectiveness through the integration of change information. Additionally, the book discusses the practical applicability of EvoTrace, provides an introduction to traceability research and practice, and offers a thorough examination of Information Retrieval and Trace Retrieval foundations. An empirical study on the culture of requirements documentation in German software development c
