Peri-urban areas, situated between urban and rural regions, are undergoing significant transformations due to urban expansion. The rapid growth of these areas highlights their contested nature, as in-migration reshapes land use, economic structures, culture, and community life. This research focuses on Yogyakarta, a rapidly growing metropolis in Indonesia, examining urban growth, urbanization, and urbanism expansion. It investigates three interconnected phenomena: changes in land and space use leading to new socio-spatial patterns; economic restructuring and the diversification of rural livelihoods causing social transformation; and the influence of local government and planning policies on development. Data was gathered through various methods, including spatial data from satellite images, surveys, direct observations, and in-depth interviews with experts such as academics, government officials, and business actors. Field research was conducted from April to July 2009 across ten villages in Sleman and Bantul regencies. The findings reveal that peri-urbanization in Yogyakarta is driven by property investment in residential estates and educational institutions. Urbanization levels are shaped more by regional development policies than market forces.
