Remnants of distinct ancient cultures present themselves to the observant eye at every corner. Naturally, a foreign visitor will inevitably wonder at some point, what history brought forth the sights and landmarks we marvel at today. This historical outline will not elaborate historical details and events, but rather structural elements, which may help us to understand the situation we are facing today - a web woven from many strands of pluricultural interaction dating back a thousand years.
