Concerned that Islamic educational institutions are being blamed for inculcating extremism, Waghit (philosophy of education, Stellenbosch U., South Africa) draws on his own experience teaching at a madrassah, his study of the madaris of South African Muslims, and his engagement with issues of democratic citizenship and cosmopolitan education in order to draw out the key principles of Islamic education in different conceptualizations in order to show that Islamic education in madaris can cultivate peace, compassion, and happiness, rather than violence.
