23 year old Lucy is struggling to reconcile her ambition to become a top hairstylist with her desire to find true love. Fleeing Manchester and the danger of ending up as 'somebody's wife', she arrives in Paris to take up a job in a posh hair salon. There she falls in love with fellow hairstylist, Michel, only to discover he's married. As she copes with feelings of guilt and jealousy, other men appear in her life - Juan, a handsome Mexican studying for the priesthood, with whom Lucy entertains the possibility of a beautiful spiritual relationship, rock musician Steve, the importuning Italian colonel, Alberto. A mixture of the naive and the sophisticated, Lucy gets herself involved in many sometimes fraught, often funny situations. Her desire to succeed in the hairdressing world remains constant, however, but her moment of truth comes at the fiercely competitive, male dominated hairdressing competition she enters along with Michel. Lucy, the story of a young woman caught up in the fashionable and political world of early 1960s Paris and Nice, raises the question: what do women want out of life and how much nearer are they to achieving it 50 years on?
