The book is an account of the origins of 'total art' (from which both environments and happenings derive) and contains fully documented chapters on the American environmental tradition of Kaprow, Oldenburg, Warhol, Kienholz and many others, on the rise of the happening in the United States and in European couontries, and on the rise of the artist as a performer.
