Edward Sapir, an influential American anthropologist-linguist, played a pivotal role in the evolution of linguistics in the United States. Born in German Pomerania and later emigrating to the U.S., he studied at Columbia University under Franz Boas, focusing on Native American languages. His work included documenting indigenous languages in California alongside Alfred Kroeber. For fifteen years, he contributed to the Geological Survey of Canada, establishing himself as a leading figure in North American linguistics, alongside contemporaries like Leonard Bloomfield.
