Set against the backdrop of the Great Depression, the story follows Lewis Seagrove, a determined father who resorts to desperate measures to support his family. Prejudice and survival intertwine as he navigates dangerous situations, including stealing coal and crossing the Ohio River for food. His bond with Sam, a young black boy, highlights themes of friendship and resilience. However, when his daughter Dorothy becomes entangled with a child pornographer, a series of events leads to murder and a wrongful charge against Lewis, exposing the flaws in the justice system.
