Set against the backdrop of Holden Village, a Lutheran retreat center in the Cascade Mountains, the narrative follows Kaethe Schwehn as she grapples with personal upheaval, including a failed romance and her parents' divorce. Initially drawn to the community's idealistic practices, she soon confronts the harsh realities of life there, including environmental hazards and interpersonal conflicts.
