Gasoline stations are primarily categorized as either major brands or independents. Major stations, like Mobil and Shell, are bound by agreements to source fuel exclusively from their parent companies, although some may supplement their supply from independent distributors. These branded locations can be dealer-owned or leased from the oil companies. Independents, or unbranded stations, operate under various names and are not affiliated with major oil brands. Diesel fuel from independents must be clearly marked to distinguish it from major brands.
