Semantic Description of Cultural Digital Image

The book presents a semantic description framework aimed at improving the management and reuse of digital images in humanities computing. It addresses the challenges of low-quality and inconsistent annotations due to the absence of domain-specific hierarchies and controlled vocabularies. By integrating a semantic description framework with a domain thesaurus, the authors explore the relationship between different semantic levels. A preliminary test using Dunhuang fresco digital images illustrates the impact of semantic granularity on annotation costs and the overall quality of image descriptions.
