Edith Wharton, an influential American writer, expertly depicted the lives and morals of the Gilded Age elite through her intimate understanding of upper-class society in New York. She made history as the first woman to win the Pulitzer Prize in Literature in 1921 for The Age of Innocence and was later honored in the National Women's Hall of Fame.
