Elzie Crisier Segar created Popeye the Sailor as a bitpart player in his 'Thimble Theatre' comic strip back in 1929. 60 years later, the rough, tough son of the sea has become an instantly recognisable character all over the world and is still going strong in the newspapers, comic books and television.
