Prunier (U. of Paris) aims to uncover the complexities of the violence in the Darfur region of Sudan and to that end discusses the history of the region, analyzes the political motivations of the contending political parties and militia groups, seeks to assess the actual numbers of deaths in the region, and explores the international response to what is undeniably a humanitarian crisis, even if it remains an "ambiguous genocide" in the eyes of Prunier.
