Důkazy hovoří proti němu, a jelikož je ve hře slavné jméno, je vyšetřování sledováno přímo ministrem. Jen Adamsberg v Chateaubriandovu vinu nevěří a jako obvykle řeší spletitý případ po svém, „na balvanu“, tedy na horním kameni dolmenu, na němž lehává a trpělivě vyčkává, až se mu z hlubin bahnitého dna mysli vynoří zasuté myšlenky, které ho navedou správným směrem. Ani tentokrát jeho metoda nezklame.
