Wie kein anderer Autor der deutschen Frühromantik hat Novalis (1772-1801) eine Literatur konzipiert und ausgeführt, die die Grenze des Sagbaren produktiv erprobt. Die These, die der Arbeit zugrunde liegt, ist, dass Novalis’ Texte sich stets als Zeichen einer anderen Bedeutung zu setzen versuchen und sich dabei als unendliche und selbstbewusste Figurationen eines Übergangs zum Höheren und Absoluten verstehen. In das Blickfeld gerät dann, wie Novalis nicht ausschließlich ein theoretisches Konzept zur Darstellung des Undarstellbaren hervorbringt, sondern es vor allem auch literarisch umsetzt. Die Arbeit argumentiert deshalb dafür, dass ein Verständnis der literarischen Ästhetik von Novalis unumgänglich für ein Verständnis seines Werkes ist.
