The book won the Surveillance Studies Network Book Prize 2014. The book argues that the mobile as a political technology in a broad sense facilitates the global export of the Western concept of individuality. This empowers those subjectivities and mindsets which can adapt to the communication regime of ubiquitous connectivity. Exemplifying two focal points – the use in protests and the surveillance of mobile phones – the book traces political trajectories of mobile phones, just as it provides deep insights into the actual practice of mobile phone use by activists and their surveillance. 50 semi-structured interviews with activists from countries including Brazil, India, Pakistan and Mexico offer a detailed and profound discussion of mobile phone success and failures in different struggles for justice. By situating mobile phone mass dissemination within a political rationality of neoliberalism and its political technology of governmentality, it shows how sovereign rule updates to catch up with the subject’s empowerment through mobile phones. The limits of mobile phone impact on activism are examined, and how it compromises its users when new sovereign means such as data retention or silent SMS surveillance are invoked.

This book explores central scenes and conceptual elaborations of what historically has been called "the problem" or "the problematic." The chapters contextualize the (re-)arising of this notion within the history of power and knowledge since the late nineteenth century, leading up to today's neocybernetic fascination with control and generalized management ideas which form a constitutive part of the power/knowledge complex of environmentality. By way of considering modes of problematization as modes of inhabitation, the volume maps its current conceptual-political uses as well as onto-epistemological challenges. Thus, "problematization" is positioned as a critical concept.

In einer Welt des globalisierten Kapitalismus dringt die Biotechnologie zunehmend in alle Formen von Organismen ein, was mit einer kapitalistischen Verwertung und Privatisierung einhergeht. Viele Menschen empfinden Angst vor Eingriffen in evolutionär entwickelte Organismen und der Umwelt, insbesondere vor vermischten Wesen und unreinem Essen. Das Critical Art Ensemble analysiert die kulturellen und religiösen Wurzeln dieser Ängste und beleuchtet ideologische sowie rhetorische Probleme, die der kapitalistischen Durchdringung entgegenstehen. Durch differenzierte Analysen der Herausforderungen des Profitsystems werden Anknüpfungspunkte für intervenierende Politik sichtbar, deren Ziel es ist, Angst in Skepsis zu verwandeln. Doch reine Erkenntnis reicht nicht aus. Mit einem Modell der unscharfen biologischen Sabotage skizziert das Kollektiv Handlungsrahmen, die aus der Industrie stammen. So entsteht ein praktisches Interventionsmodell, das außerhalb juristischer Verfolgung operiert, aber dennoch präzise, wirksam und für die Gegenseite kostspielig ist. Zentrales Diktum ist die Verlangsamung der Invasion, um die Kosten zu erhöhen.
