This multi-disciplinary collection of essays draws on various theoretical approaches to explore the highly visual nature of the Middle Ages and expose new facets of old texts and artefacts. The term 'visual culture' has been used in recent years to refer to modern media theory, film, modern art and other contemporary representational forms and functions. But this emphasis on visuality is not only a modern phenomenon. Discourses on visual processes pervade the works of medieval secular poets, theologians, and scholastics alike. The Middle Ages was a highly visual society in which images, objects, and performance played a dominant communicative and representational role in both secular and religious areas of society. The essays in this volume, which present various perspectives on medieval visual culture, provide a critical historical basis for the study of visuality and visual processes.

Focusing on the significance of Thomasin von Zerclaere's Welscher Gast, this study highlights its role in shaping social practices in medieval German court society. The poem, a popular didactic work, underwent numerous adaptations while maintaining core themes. Kathryn Starkey examines the interplay of text and imagery, illustrating how the poem evolved alongside its audience, transitioning from rural to urban elites. Notably, the 1340 Gotha redaction showcases a redesigned image cycle aimed at conveying courtly behavior, emphasizing its historical importance and contribution to elite identity formation.

Das „Zeigen“ in mittelalterlichen Texten Während Sagen und Zeigen das Hören und Sehen im Raum der wechselseitigen Wahrnehmung koordinieren, müssen in der medialen Repräsentation die sensorischen Erfahrungen vermittelt und durch den Adressaten imaginativ substituiert werden. Eine zentrale Rolle spielen dabei deiktische Verfahren der Bezugnahme, der Verortung und Orientierung. Sie manifestieren sich in den überlieferten Zeugnissen des Mittelalters als vielfältig ausdifferenzierte Zeigehandlungen, die Aufmerksamkeit stimulieren und lenken, Positionierungen anbieten und infrage stellen. – Der Band enthält Beiträge zu geistlichen und weltlichen Texten, besonders zu Text-Bild-Beziehungen in Manuskripten, Drucken und Flugblättern. Es geht um Imaginationslenkung und Ekphrasis, Imagination und Gewalt, um die Organisation von Schauräumen und das Spiel mit ‚Kippfiguren‘, insgesamt um vielfältige Zeige- und Appellstrukturen, die auf den performativen Charakter medial vermittelter Wahrnehmungsprozesse zurückverweisen.
