In reading all the theoretical contributions to this book, an essentially common idea of the social can be observed which is of fundamental importance for a new definition of artistic a process-related order of institutionalized actions, including the linguistic actions to which individuals are exposed. For here, in the repetition of such institutionalized acts, is where subjects first emerge at all. Objects, whether they be objects of everyday use or whole architectures, are like moulds which provide for the institutionalization of actions. The artist emerges as a social figure, as the product of a society and the agent of political interests. From this point of view, the status of objects, the status of the “work” is not the expression of a circumscribed meaning, but the instrument of forming a subject. The opposition of theory and practice becomes obsolete. Subject and object are meaning written into actions.

Katarina Zdjelars Video-, Sound- und Textarbeiten dokumentieren alle einen Moment körperlichen Ausdrucks, der beim Übergang von Sprache zu Musik sicht- und hörbar wird. Sie zeigen, wie sich historische und geopolitische Zwänge auf individuelle oder kollektive Wünsche auswirken. In „The Perfect Sound“ (2009) hat die Künstlerin zum Beispiel die Sitzung eines englischen Sprachtherapeuten aufgezeichnet, der durch gezieltes Stimmtraining einem Einwanderer den fremdsprachigen Akzent abgewöhnt. Der Therapeut intoniert, der Patient ahmt die fremden Laute nach. Das Stimmtraining soll dem Neuankömmling die reibungslose Integration in die britische Gesellschaft ermöglichen und vor Übergriffen schützen – so die Intention der Behörden. Die Publikation „Towards a Further Word“ basiert auf der Einzelausstellung von Katarina Zdjelar im Bielefelder Kunstverein 2014 und vereint ausgewählte Werke der letzten sechs Jahre.

This publication is a work of both art and theory, and aligns itself with a socially activated, political understanding of aesthetics. The artist duo, to ensure that this is retained in book form, offers the readers and authors the precise aesthetic space of experience that constitutes their artistic practice. Crucially, this openness does not only stand for a transgression of the traditional concept of work, but also brings the concrete rules and conditions of a participative practice into play, a work form invested with continuation and completion. Poor Man's Expression examines the relationship between film, video, technology and art, with a particular focus on the reciprocal influences between conceptual art and experimental film. Works, lectures, and performances by international artists - created for the exhibition of the same title in Berlin in 2006, and expanded for the publication - are set alongside historical experimental films. This profound book asks whether the infiltration of experimental film into the realm of 1980s and 90s media art is analogous to general social and media trends brought about by the fragmentation caused by consumer society. Featured artists include Stephanie Taylor, Sebestyen Kodolanyi, Sebastian Lutgert, Henrik Olesen, Mathias Poledna, Sean Snyder, Daria Martin, Kirsten Pieroth, Martin Ebner, Florian Zeyfang.

Dass die Sprache dem „Überblick aller Beziehungen“ nicht gerecht werden kann, ist eine Grundeinsicht Adnan Softićs, um Kunst zu produzieren. Immer wieder wird das vermeintlich Vertraute und scheinbar Gesicherte verunsichert. Ein Verorten des Unbekannten führt zur konsequenten Entwertung und damit Neuschöpfung von Symbolen. Seine Sensibilität, sein genauer Blick für Spuren, der an kleinen, scheinbar privaten oder marginalen Phänomenen die Physiognomie des Ganzen entzifferbar macht, kennzeichnet seine Film- und Video-Arbeiten. Der Alltag, den er in seinen Arbeiten thematisiert, erscheint wie von Hohlräumen unterzogen, schwebend gleichsam und fragil. Immer wieder kommen Softic‘s künstlerische Arbeiten auf die Bedrohtheit des Vertrauten und scheinbar Gesicherten zurück. Sie machen erlebbar, dass nichts garantiert ist, und darin sprechen sie von einer bestimmten „Schwere“ der Situation. Aber zugleich tun diese Arbeiten das auf eine leichte, oft sogar unbeschwert scheinende Art und Weise. Ein Methodenbewusstsein, das auch mit der breiten künstlerischen Erfahrungen des Autors zu tun hat.

Mit der Installation seiner Glassmalerei „Modernology“ beginnend, stellt das Buch die fortwährende Beschäftigung von Florian Pumhösl mit den Motiven, Inhalten und Materialien der frühen nicht-westlichen Avantgarden vor. Während Sabeth Buchmann und Jan Verwoert Florian Pumhösls Arbeit und Strategien von zwei unterschiedlichen Perspektiven aus diskutieren, liefert Thomas Hackners Beitrag eine Einsicht in die Arbeit von Onchi Koshiro, ein japanischer Buchgestalter, dessen abstrakt-formale Typografie Inspirationsquelle und thematischer Bezug von Pumhösls Arbeiten wurde.
