“Contradiction” is a core concept in the humanities and the social sciences. Beside the classical ideas of logical or dialectical contradiction, instances of “lived” contradiction and strategies of coping with it are objects of this study. Contradiction Studies discuss the many ways in which explicit or implicit contradictions are negotiated in different political or cultural settings. This volume collects articles that tackle the concept of contradiction, practices of contradicting and lived contradictions from a number of relevant perspectives and assembles contributions from linguistics, literary studies, philosophy, political science, and media studies.

This volume unites twenty-three articles by high-caliber Native and non-Native, North American and European scholars on a variety of topics relating to North America and tribal, local, and global aspects - land and homeland, education, environmental ethics and politics, storywork and literature, and film. The book seeks to address the changes in Native and Minority Studies and engage in critical self-reflection. It also investigates the interfaces between local, tribal, and global. How do global developments affect the local and the tribal? What ways of resistance are open and how can global developments be turned to their advantage? Likewise, how are these developments contextualized in texts and films?

Der Band, entstanden aus einer Tagung des Interdisziplinären Zentrums für Frauen- und Geschlechterstudien (IZFG) an der Universität Greifswald im November 2004, untersucht den Zusammenhang zwischen Sex/ismus als soziale, politische und diskursive Praxis und der Rolle der Medien in diesem Kontext. Printmedien, (Werbe)Fotografie, Fernsehen und Film werden anhand ausgewählter Formate und Materialien in ihrer Funktion als Vermittler und Erzeuger von Sex/ismus analysiert. Dabei werden alltägliche kulturelle Rezeptionsangebote wie Soaps, Doku-Soaps, Spielfilme, Werbeserien sowie das Feldbusch-Schwarzer-TV-Duell in der Kerner Late-Night-Show und Beispiele für Ratgeberliteratur und Hochschuljournalistik betrachtet. Das analytische Interesse fokussiert sich auf sexistische Medienpraktiken im soziologischen Verständnis des Sexismus-Begriffs, die theoretischen Konsequenzen des performativen Turns sowie deren analytische und methodische Reichweite im Zusammenhang mit anderen Differenzkategorien. Die medientheoretische Reflexion des Geschlechterperformativs wird ebenfalls thematisiert. Die interdisziplinäre Analyse sexistischer kultureller Praktiken erfordert ein kulturwissenschaftliches Fachverständnis; Vertreterinnen der beteiligten Disziplinen wie Rechtswissenschaften, Kommunikations- und Medienwissenschaften, Amerikanistik und Germanistik präsentieren unterschiedliche Erkenntnisse zu aktuellen Sexismus-Praktiken in den Medien.
