Der deutsche Physiker Oskar Emil Meyer (1834-1909) hat wichtige Entdeckungen auf dem Gebiet der kinetischen Gastheorie gemacht – vorliegendes Buch trug wesentlich zur Verbreitung dieser Erkenntnisse im deutschsprachigen Raum bei. Nach Meyers Promotion im Jahre 1860 folgte eine zweijährige Anstellung als Privatdozent in Göttingen, bevor er habilitierte und ab 1866 an der Universität Breslau unterrichtete.
