Business process modeling plays an important role in the management of business processes. As valuable design artifacts, business process models are subject to quality considerations. The absence of formal errors such as deadlocks is of paramount importance for the subsequent implementation of the process. In his book Jan Mendling develops a framework for the detection of formal errors in business process models and the prediction of error probability based on quality attributes of these models (metrics). He presents a precise description of Event-driven Process Chains (EPCs), their control-flow semantics and a suitable correctness criterion called EPC soundness.

      Business Process Management Workshops
    • This book constitutes the proceedings of the 4th workshop on Business Process Model and Notation, BPMN 2012, held in Vienna, Austria, in September 2012. The BPMN workshop series provides a forum for academics and practitioners who share an interest in business process modeling using the Business Process Modeling Notation, which is seen by many as the de facto standard for business process modeling. This year, the workshop lasted two days and consisted of both a scientific and a practitioner event. The six full and three short papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 22 submissions. The workshop applied a thorough reviewing process, during which each paper was reviewed by three Program Committee members. In addition, an extended abstract of the workshop keynote is also included.

      Business process model and notation
    • The BPMN 2010 workshop series provides a forum for academics and practitioners interested in business process modeling using Business Process Modeling Notation (BPMN), which has gained significant traction in both academia and industry as the de facto standard for business process modeling. This notation is popular among business analysts, tool vendors, practitioners, and end users, as it aims to bridge the gap between business and IT, facilitating closer integration of process design and implementation. The second workshop in the series occurred on October 13–14, 2010, at the Hasso Plattner Institute at the University of Potsdam, Germany. This volume features six research papers selected from 16 submissions, each rigorously reviewed by an average of four Program Committee members. Additionally, the proceedings include three short papers and three extended abstracts from invited keynote talks. A practitioners’ event was also held following the scientific workshop. Gratitude is extended to all who contributed to BPMN 2010, particularly the Program Committee members and additional reviewers for their expertise and commitment to maintaining the workshop’s high scientific quality, as well as to the authors who submitted their valuable work.
