Cet ouvrage vient combler une lacune dans l'historiographie récente de l'exil américain, durant la Deuxième Guerre, des écrivains francais, où le nom d'Ivan Goll est souvent absent ou réduit à une simple mention. Il arrive à Goll d'être rattaché par les travaux de l'Exilforschung à l'émigration de langue allemande, à un moment qui le voit pourtant délaisser l'allemand au profit du francais et même de l'anglais. Puisant dans une vingtaine de fonds d'archives des deux côtés de l'Atlantique, la recherche menée a permis de placer Goll auprès de poètes américains et des surréalistes réfugiés à New York, dans ses tentatives d'établir des connexions avec les appareils de publication et la vie littéraire newyorkais.
