Im Jahre 1949 verfasste Felix Jacoby im Exil in Großbritannien seine einführende Studie in Leben und Werk der Atthidographen (Atthis. The Local Chronicles of Ancient Athens, Oxford), der er ein Jahr später, im Rahmen seiner Sammlung der „Fragmente der griechischen Historiker“, die zwei Bände mit Testimonien und Fragmenten eben jener Autoren der Geschichte Athens (und anderer Lokalhistorien) sowie bald darauf (1953-4) zwei Bände mit Kommentaren zu eben jenen Historikern folgen ließ. P. J. Rhodes gelingt es in seiner kleinen hier vorgelegten Studie nicht nur, Jacobys Anteil an der Erforschung der Atthides deutlich zu machen und in den Gang der Forschungsgeschichte einzubetten; er versteht es auch meisterhaft, auf der Grundlage der neuesten, auch eigenen, Forschung die Entstehungsgeschichte dieser Gattung zu beschreiben und ihren Stellenwert für die Rekonstruktion athenischer Geschichte in archaischer und klassischer Zeit zu verdeutlichen.
