It highlights the unique position of Burma within the British Empire and the Southeast Asian Chinese network, revealing internal rivalries and integration among regional groups. By examining everyday life and key figures, the book sheds light on contemporary perceptions and memories, while also addressing historical roots of ongoing ethnic issues in modern Myanmar.
