Peter Hinchliffe vloog als navigator bij RAF Bomber Command van 1944 tot 1945. Zijn belangstelling voor de Duitse nachtjagerstrijdmacht ontstond in november 1944, toen hij boven België werd neergeschoten door een nachtjager tijdens een operationele missie. Na een periode als schoolleraar keerde Hinchliffe terug naar de RAF als fighter controller, waar hij in 1966 met pensioen ging.
