Mikuláš je malý nezbedný klučík s partou kamarádů, kupou bláznivých nápadů a úžasným dětským pohledem na svět. Jeho příběhy dostanou každého svým promyšleným a nevinným humorem, lehkostí stylu, a výjimečným literárním talentem autora – Réné Goscinyho. Příhody Mikuláše a jeho legračních kamarádů tlustého Vendelína, vychloubavého Augustína, silného Albína, šprta Celestýna, Kryšpína,Viktorína či Fridolína jsou vlastně celkem obyčejné postřehy všedních dnů, nebýt Goscinyho geniálního stylu, talentu zachytit dětský způsob uvažování a dodat příběhům výborné a nečekané pointy či legrační kontrasty. Vynikající pointy dodávají někdy úsměvně filozofický podtón a skutečně nemusíte být dětmi, byste se zasmáli inteligentnímu a nadčasovému vtipu, který, mnohem víc než v ději, spočívá v jazyce a slovních hříčkách.

On sám má důvod i právo Benátky milovat – vždyť i on patří k „benátským milencům“. Také pro Helenu, kteráprchla z Paříže před sobeckým přítelem a v lásce k Lassnerovi nalézá nový vztah k životu, jsou Benátky nejkrásnějším útočištěm. Jako vždy u Roblèse, třebaže citový život hrdinů i město, do něhož je příběh zasazen, zaujímají v románě nejvýznamější místo, promítá se do děje osudově i současná realita. Lassner, který v Miláně při atentátu na soudce náhodně zachytil objektivem jeho vraha, je zahrnován výhružkami a vážně ohrožen na životě. Kniha byla označena francouzskou kritikou za jeden z nejkrásnějších Roblèsových románů.

The Masterpiece is the tragic story of Claude Lantier, an ambitious and talented young artist from the provinces who has come to conquer Paris and is conquered by the flaws in his own genius. While his boyhood friend Pierre Sandoz becomes a successful novelist, Claude's originality is mocked at the Salon and turns gradually into a doomed obsession with one great canvas. Life - in the form of his model and wife Christine and their deformed child Jacques - is sacrificed on the altar of Art. The Masterpiece is the most autobiographical of the twenty novels in Zola's Rougon-Macquart series. Set in the 1860s and 1870s, it provides a unique insight into his career as a writer and his relationship with Cézanne, a friend since their schooldays in Aix-en-Provence. It also presents a well-documented account of the turbulent Bohemian world in which the Impressionists came to prominence despite the conservatism of the Academy and the ridicule of the general public.

“Le Grand Meaulnes” is the only novel published by Alain-Fournier in 1913 when he was twenty-seven years old. A year later he was killed in the First World War. It tells the story of the arrival of a young Augustin Meaulnes at a village school in Sainte-Agathe in France. He boards with the head-master’s family, and the narrator of the book is the head-master’s son, François Seurel. It is a portrayal of adolescence when the imagination of childhood begins to embrace the realities of the adult world. What happens belongs to the two spheres, and is told here years later by François. Into it he pours his nostalgia for what is gone, regret for what was lost, and his memories of his fellow student and companion, Augustin Meaulnes, and the beautiful Yvonne de Galais. In this unique translation Jennifer Hashmi has adhered to the narrative poetic style of the original, and has respected Alain-Fournier’s frequent use of the ellipse which hints at more than he can say, and allows readers to intuit the rest. Thus the mysterious haunting quality of the novel is preserved. Students should find this translation most helpful in in that it carries with it not only the meaning of the text but also the atmosphere and emotion of the original work. However, whether student or not, this is a novel which has captivated readers for nearly a century as it presents the apparently everyday world through the eyes of François the dreamer, and Meaulnes the adventurer, both seeking the ultimate happiness they believe is waiting for all who dare.
