Georg Christoph Lichtenberg wurde am 1. Juli 1742 in Oberramstadt bei Darmstadt geboren. Nach dem Studium der Mathematik, Naturwissenschaften und Astronomie unternahm er mehrere England-Reisen, ehe er 1770 eine Professur für Experimentalphysik und Naturwissenschaften in Göttingen antrat. Ab 1778 redigierte er den „Göttinger Taschenkalender“. Wegen eines Rückenleidens, unter dem er seit seiner Kindheit litt, führte er ein zurückgezogenes Leben. Sein schriftstellerisches Schaffen besteht nahezu vollständig aus Aufzeichnungen von Aphorismen in seinen sogenannten Sudelbüchern, mit denen sich Lichtenberg einen Namen als einer der geistreichsten Schriftsteller der Aufklärung gemacht hat. Er starb am 24. Februar 1799 in Göttingen. Robert Gernhardt, 1937 in Reval (heute Tallinn) in Estland geboren, studierte Malerei und Germanistik in Stuttgart und Berlin und lebte seit 1964 als Schriftsteller, Maler, Zeichner und Karikaturist in Frankfurt am Main. Für sein Werk erhielt er zahlreiche Preise. Robert Gernhardt starb 2006 in Frankfurt.
