Píše se rok 1914 a mladí muži odcházejí do války. Británii musejí udržet v chodu ženy. Peggy pracuje jako knihařka v nakladatelství Clarendon v Oxfordu, žije na obytném člunu se svou sestrou-dvojčetem Maud a touží po vzdělání. Potajmu čte knihy, které váže, a zmetky si odnáší domů, čímž rozšiřuje sbírku, kterou započala už jejich matka, také knihvazačka.
