Abū Ḥāmid Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad al-Ghazālī was een vooraanstaand figuur binnen de soennitische islam, bekend als filosoof, theoloog, jurist en mysticus. De islamitische traditie beschouwt hem als een vernieuwer van het geloof, die elke eeuw verschijnt om het spirituele begrip van de gemeenschap te herstellen. Zijn tijdgenoten erkenden zijn diepgaande invloed en verleenden hem de titel "Bewijs van de Islam".
