August Derleth was een Amerikaanse schrijver en antholoog, vooral bekend om zijn rol in de publicatie van H.P. Lovecraft en zijn eigen bijdragen aan de Cthulhu Mythos en het kosmische horror-genre. Hij richtte Arkham House op, een belangrijke uitgeverij die bovennatuurlijke fictie in hardcover naar de VS bracht. Naast deze bijdragen was Derleth een vooraanstaand Amerikaans regionaal schrijver, ook productief in genres als historische fictie en poëzie. Zijn meest ambitieuze werk, de Sac Prairie Saga, had tot doel het leven in Wisconsin te memoriseren en toonde zijn pioniersgeest als naturalist en natuurbeschermer.
